Chicken wings are chosen by sauce, and five cover almost every preference: Buffalo is vinegar-hot and sharp, Korean BBQ is sweet and garlicky with a slower heat, honey garlic is mild and sweet, teriyaki is salty-sweet and glossy, and salt and pepper is dry-seasoned with no sauce at all. A sensible order is six to eight wings per person as a shared starter, or ten to twelve if wings are the meal. At The Aroma Bistro & Bar wings are $19, or $12 during Happy Hour.
The five sauces, honestly described
- Buffalo Heat — cayenne and butter. Sharp, vinegary, properly hot. The reference wing.
- Korean BBQ — sweet, garlicky, a slow heat rather than a sharp one.
- Honey Garlic — the mildest. The one to order for a table with children at it.
- Teriyaki — salty-sweet and glossy. Not hot at all.
- Salt & Pepper — dry-seasoned, no sauce. The best way to judge whether a kitchen can actually fry.
Why crispiness is the real test
A wing lives or dies on its skin. Sauce applied to a soft wing soaks straight in and the whole thing goes limp. A wing rendered properly stays crisp under sauce for the ten minutes it takes to eat it, which is why ours are finished in the sauce rather than cooked in it.
How many to order
- As a shared starter: six to eight per person.
- As the meal: ten to twelve, with fries.
- For a table of four: two orders, two sauces, so nobody is stuck with a heat level they did not choose.
What to drink with them
Cold and simple beats clever. House Lager is $4 in Happy Hour, and a 70oz tower is $20 for two or more people.
